When I was growing up my great-grandmother had an amethyst ring I coveted. So did she. It was probably the only really nice piece of jewelry she ever owned. Her birthday was in February and so was mine, so we shared a special bond with that ring. When she passed on, the ring became mine. I wore it everyday until I lost so much weight that my fingers shrunk. I always meant to get the ring re-sized, so I tucked it away in a special box. In moving from one size of the country to the other (three times!), I ended up losing the box. Yeah, I’m devastated.
So, I’m on the hunt for a new amethyst ring. One that is reminiscent of the one my great-grandmother handed down to me. Her’s was a simple, but elegant, emerald cut with two small diamonds on either side.
Amethyst is a beautiful quartz stone. It’s shades can range from light lavender to a deep purple. The Greeks thought it could protect you from drunkenness so they used it to decorate their drinking vessels. The rest of us, though, think it makes great jewelry, from necklaces to yes, lovely amethyst rings. The stone is also the birthstone for February.
